The Mustang Animal Welfare Center will be temporarily closed to the public with limited services from April 6th - April 14th due to a respiratory outbreak at other local animal shelters. We will not be accepting strays brought in from the public or owner-surrendered pets until further notice in order to prevent the spread of the disease and protect the animals in our care.
Mustang Animal Welfare officers will still be responding to animals at large, animal bite incidents and other emergent calls for service in the community, but we are asking the public to not pick up strays and instead call the shelter 405-256-6207 if you see or find a stray.
Possible symptoms of both Canine Influenza-viral and Streptococcus zooepidemicus(strep zoo) -bacterial are:
- coughing similar to Kennel Cough
- Lethargy
- Not eating
- Coughing/Honking Cough
- Sneezing
- Labored Breathing
- Mucus from eyes or nose
- Choking sounds/reverse sneezing
- Loose stool
- Fever
Dogs showing influenza or strep zoo symptoms should be treated for both according to our vet. If your dog shows any similar symptoms, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
The decision to close the shelter to the public is not done lightly and is under the advice of our veterinarian. This decision will be reevaluated on April 14, 2023.
APRIL 17, 2023 UPDATE - The Animal Welfare Center will reopen to the public on Monday, April 24, 2023 and will resume normal operating hours at that time.
