The City of Mustang provides an "Employee Spotlight" each month so that citizens can learn more about the public servants that contribute to our City running smoothly. The Employee Spotlight will feature answers to a series of questions about the selected employee, the department and position they serve in, and unique likes and interests of the employee.
The September Employee Spotlight is Firefighter Katey Lawson, Mustang Fire Department.

What do you enjoy the most about working for the City of Mustang? I have enjoyed working with and getting to know my coworkers and the other agencies that work for the City.
What project have you been a part of while employed by the City of Mustang that you enjoyed the most? Last year I had the privilege to go help instruct at Camp Inferno. If you've never heard of it, Camp Inferno is an annual two-day event hosted by female firefighters from all different departments in Oklahoma. The goal of Camp Inferno is to inspire women to explore and seek career opportunities in the fire service. If you are a woman and are interested in a career in fire service, you can go online and find more information on Camp Inferno.
Favorite Food? Mac & Cheese, obviously! (Or ANY kind of sweet treat)

Do you have a secret skill or talent? I can sing! Fun Fact: I used to sing the National Anthem at the OKC Dodgers games.
You are the first female firefighter for the City of Mustang and consequently are an important part of the history of this organization and the community too! Is being the first intimidating and what do you hope to change about how people look at fire services in the future? I was not intimidated to come to Mustang at all, I was super excited! I had worked at a different fire department for two years prior to coming to Mustang, so the fire service was not a brand new experience for me. I feel very honored to be the first female firefighter at Mustang Fire Department and I am thankful that everyone welcomed me with open arms. I love being able to inspire other girls and women to do what they want and be who they want to be. Its really cool to go out into the public and hear little girls say "A girl firefighter!" and be excited about it. When girls come to the station to look at the fire trucks and I hear "I want to be a firefighter when I grow up!" it truly makes my heart happy. I always tell them they can do anything they set their mind to! I hope that others view the fire service as a team and understand that no one can do this job alone. It takes a whole group of us with different strengths and weaknesses to get the job done, but we're all problem solvers at the end of the day and we all care about the people we're responding to. We wouldn't do this job if we didn't!
