Firefighter Recruit Job Description

 BASE SALARY:  $41,765/yr + financial incentives

PURPOSE OF POSITION: This is a non-exempt position in the Fire Department responsible for performing rescue operations, fire suppression, and prevention duties.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Performs fire-fighting duties such as combating, extinguishing and preventing fires, and answering emergency calls with an engine, ladder, or miscellaneous vehicles. Drives assigned firefighting or rescue apparatus to fires and other emergencies, transporting emergency personnel; operates pumps and other mechanical equipment, lays and connects hoses, directs water onto burning structures, raises and climbs ladders; uses other firefighting techniques such as search and rescue, administers first aid to injured persons; performs salvage operations; and inspects assigned areas to assure knowledge of access, fire hazards, etc…
  • Trains for and participates in the protection of life and property by firefighting and rescue activities.  Participates in fire drills and attends training classes in firefighting, first aid and related subjects.
  • Handles routine custodial maintenance of the fire department equipment (such as breathing equipment, resuscitation equipment, etc.), apparatus and quarters.
  • Responds to medical emergencies, provides basic first aid, and assists paramedics.
  • Conforms to the safety requirements of the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • High school graduate or approved equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and a driving record that meets or exceeds the City of Mustang driving standards
  •    Must pass a rigorous background investigation and criminal history check as well as a post offer polygraph and psychological exam.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Current CPAT passing score with an Oklahoma technology center or proof of participation in the Oklahoma Fire Pension and Retirement Plan.
  • Knowledge of modern firefighting and fire prevention principles and first aid techniques, and be a State Certified and Nationally Registered EMT.


SAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION NOTICE
 
This classification is a “safety-sensitive” position as defined by the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws.  As a “safety-sensitive” classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing.  Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening.  Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
 
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:  In accordance with Oklahoma State law, the incumbent must serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months.  The incumbent will be released if he/she fails to meet the requirements necessary for employment with the Mustang Fire Department.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 

  • Operate both as a member of a team and independently at incidents of uncertain duration.
  • Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing duties.  Must perform physically demanding work in hot (>250 deg. F) and humid (up to 100%) atmospheres while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body cooling mechanisms.
  • Work in wet, icy, or muddy areas.
  • Perform a variety of tasks on slippery, hazardous surfaces such as roof tops or ladders.
  • Work in areas where sustaining traumatic or thermal injuries is possible.
  • Face exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents either through inhalation or skin contact.
  • Face exposure to infectious agents such as hepatitis B or HIV.
  • Wear personal protective equipment that weighs approximately 50 pounds while performing tasks.
  • Perform physically demanding work while wearing positive pressure breathing equipment.
  • Perform complex tasks during life-threatening emergencies.
  • Work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
  • Face life or death decisions during emergency conditions.
  • Exposed to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma and burn victims.
  • Make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods.
  • Operate manual and power tools in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces.
  • Rely on speech, as well as senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency; maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic, and potentially life threatening environment throughout the duration of the operation.
  • Must meet or exceed the physical standards set by the Oklahoma State Firefighters Pension and Retirement Board, including the successful completion of a health physical.
